CHGPA Christmas Party

There will be no general meeting of the CHGPA this December. Instead, we'll be celebrating the holidays at the annual CHGPA Christmas Party! This year's hosts are John and Joanne Dullahan:

1213 Firth of Lorne Circle
Ft. Washington, MD 20744
(H) 301-203-8281
(W) 202-231-4710

Directions:

Take Indian Head Highway (Route 210, exit 2A) south from the beltway 495/95 (it's the first exit in Maryland driving east from the Wilson Bridge, and the last exit before 295 north if driving west toward Virginia from Maryland. Bear right on the first off-ramp if coming from Virginia, and, if coming south on 295 from the District, bear to the left.).

Go about 5.5 miles south, and six traffic lights. After passing Ft. Washington Rd., take a right at the next light at Swan Creek Rd (there's a small shopping center on the right).

Proceed to a traffic circle; go straight across. Continue to a stop sign at Riverview Road, where you'll make a left.

Go about 75 meters and take next left into Firth of Lorne Circle. It's the 4th house on left (white with blue shutters).

MHGA & CHGPA Parachute Re-Pack Day

Brian Vant-Hull has once again organized a parachute repack day. This year, it will be held near Westminster/Taneytown Maryland. There's a good chance that we may be able to practice deployments at the event, but you might want to check with Brian to make sure.
For directions, costs, and other details, see Brian's Westminster Chute Repack webpage.

HamFest and Ham Radio Fair

Vienna Wireless Society's Winterfest
National Capital Area Ham Radio Fair
Annandale Campus, Northern Virginia Community College
URL: winterfest.home.att.net

This is a chance to give some support to the HAM community, and let a lot of them know about our niche usage in their world. Coordinator for this event is Cragin Shelton, cragins@cais.com, 703-922-6472. We hope to have one glider on display outside the building, plus a display table in the lobby. We'll use many of the same materials as for the Kite Festival, but add information about ham radio use in hang gliding. Volunteers are needed!

Smithsonian Kite Festival

Smithsonian Kite Festival
Washington Monument Grounds
The Mall
URL: kitefestival.org

We have had a display there for several years, and have always had a good time. This year our coordinator will be Brian Vant-Hull. Joe Gregor is in training for a marathon that same weekend, so he must step down as Kite Day organizer for the clubs. Contact Brian if you can work the festival at brianvh@umd5.umd.edu, 301-434-1146. For both days we'll need folks to help carry stuff in and set up, as well as tables, gliders, and pilots who like to talk about what we do!

DC-101 Day at Highland Aerosports

Postponed Until Later This Year

Diane and Elliot of the DC101 Morning Class will be treated to tandem flights courtesy of Chad and Sunny on Thursday April 11th at approximately 3:00pm. As the Flight Director/Social Coordinator, I would like to extend and beg of all of you to play hooky and come out to support DC101 and their upcoming participation with the Pulpit Fly-In in September. The more people that show up, the more excited DC101 will be to come out and play with our group in the future. I will coordinate with Chad to make the weather call on Thursday (4/11) morning and will try and get the word out early on the listserver, but please plan to come out if at all possible. Thanks!

30th Annual Kitty Hawk Hang Gliding Spectacular

The oldest continuous Hang Gliding Competition in the world and Airports Expo will include skydiving, paragliding, ultralights and more. The competition begins the 17th on the sand dunes of Jockey's Ridge. Demonstrations, aerotow competition, street dance and awards ceremonies are all features of this spectacular event. Annual inductions to the Rogallo Hall of Fame will occur Sunday. Hang Glider Pilots who have achieved their Hang One or higher are welcome to compete. Beginners can join the fun and experience flight with a Dune lesson or Tandem Aero-tow.

If you made it to our April meeting and heard Bruce's talk, then you know that this event is going to be lots of fun! There will be hang gliding movies, two days of dune comps, two days of aerotow comps, multiple parties, a street-dance, you name it! Bruce and Kitty Hawk Kites have generously supported our Pulpit Fly-In for quite a few years, so it would be great if we could do a good turn for them, with a strong turnout from the Capital and Maryland clubs. Matthew G. had a good suggestion: look on the web for rental houses in Nags Head on the Tuesday or Wednesday before the spectacular gets underway. Chances are you'll be able to find a house that is still available, and at a rate that is comparable to a hotel room.

27th Annual High Rock Party/Fly-In

Latest Update: No Flying At The High Rock Fly-In!

Unfortunately, the flight restrictions that have closed High Rock since 9/11 were re-imposed on Thursday, May 30, in spite of the (initially successful) efforts by Joe Gregor to have them lifted for our event. The party, of course, is still a "go" : come on out to show support and appreciation for Emma-Jane and Harry, and to have a good time with friends and family.

Though we are superficially charging for food and beer (burgers, veggie burgers, sausage, salads, sheet cake, Black and Tan and Yuengling) the real reason for collecting money is to have something to give to Emma Jane and Harry to help make up for the losses they've accrued in flying fees. So we're charging a little extra: $20 per pilot for food and flights (perhaps $15 for non-pilots? Not sure). The more who come the better. Cragin has suggested we all pay in silver dollars and make a glittering pile on her table.

We encourage people to bring extra side dishes to liven up the standard fare. Potluck is fun.

Forgot to call home for Mother's Day? Expunge that guilty conscience: Make an effort to spend some quality time with Emma Jane.

Visit last year's 2001 High Rock Fly-In Webpage if you need directions. Note: If following Route 550, after the turn at Decker's grocery you will eventually come to a stop sign. Go straight through, and follow the road to the very top of the ridge.

[BEGIN OBSOLETE]

There will be no security checks. The mad rush to list every pilot who could fly is no longer necessary: nearly compete reversion to normal for a one-week period. This is an open fly-in, all are invited, and we request those on other lists to cross-post information about it. As we don't anticipate anyone looking over our shoulder there is no need to bend over backwards to behave in a genteel fashion. Have fun!

HOWEVER! Neither should we bend over backwards to make aeronautical asses of ourselves, so we must make sure the flying portion is done by the book (which is our standard procedure anyway). We can't afford any accidental violations. Call 1-800-WXBRIEF before flying to make sure that the flight restrictions at High Rock have been lifted. DO NOT encroach on P-40's airspace : stay in front of the radio towers behind launch at all times. With luck, the Fly-In will be useful in convincing the powers-that-be that High Rock should be re-opened to hang glider flight.

[END OBSOLETE]

Ridgely Fly-In at Highland Aerosports

Highland Aerosports will host it's 3rd annual fly-in on Sat, June 8th. The days events will include XC, duration, and spot landing contests. If weather permits, we'll also have water skiing, kite surfing, and many other water sports (Let's hope not). We will have a BBQ pig roast with chicken and a pasta dish for the veg heads on Saturday night. Dinner will be followed by an awards ceremony.

Although the official fly-in is on Sat, we invite everyone to stay as long as you like. We expect demos from Wills. Moyes, Aeros, Seedwings, and North Wing Friday through Monday. If it does rain, we are holding the following weekend as a rain date. Registration for the event is $35 and includes contest entry, dinner sat night, a fly-in T, and cold refreshments Saturday evening. Camping is $5 per night and tow fees are the usual. We hope to see everyone out here. We'll post more later. Contact us directly if you have any questions. If you get time, send us an e-mail and let us know you'll be here.

Thanks, The Highland gang

CHGPA General Meeting and
Seminar

Despite everyone saying speeds to fly is a piece of cake, I still plan to hold the seminar at the next meeting before the fly-in. Reason: I think there's alot to be learned by actually looking at the numbers, beyond just knowing the theory. So it will go like this:

  1. 5 minutes doing basic glide angle calculations under various conditions so that everyone clearly knows what we're talking about. If you think this sounds like baby stuff, take it from a long-time high school physics teacher: doing a little basic arithmetic BEFORE you look at a graph makes all the difference because you know what you're looking at and don't have to think so much to catch up. The numbers will be related to basic diagrams.
  2. Looking at a complete set of calculations for a Falcon, Ultrasport, and Fusion. This is where I expect many people might be mildly disconcerted to find some speeds are different from what they expected.
  3. Jumping into the graph theory. I doubt if I'll go all the way through to McCready theory, but will give a good enough introduction so that you don't quit halfway through Pagen's "Speeds to Fly" section from mathematical overload.
  4. Any experienced XC people can talk about using this stuff to optimize flight given various objectives. I'm just gonna talk about everyday flying.

I think many people who now talk about how simple speeds to fly is forget how thick those graph manipulations seemed on first reading. Nearly everything's simple once you've had a year or so to mull it over. I just want to cut down on the mulling time. And again, I think nearly everyone understands the basic concepts: but to take some guesswork out, the numbers do matter. And I've cut off all those damn decimals.

I plan to start talking at 7:15

XC Clinic at Highland Aerosports

Cross country flying is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of hang gliding. Over the years Ric Niehaus and Larry Huffman have benefited from many people who have graciously contributed their time and expertise in furthering their skill and knowledge in this and other areas of hang gliding. With this in mind Ric and Larry feel that it is their turn to share what they have learned with other current and aspiring XC pilots.

So... On September 28 & 29, Ric and Larry would like to invite those interested in flying XC to come and fly with them at Highland Aerosports. This would include a preflight briefing/seminar and, weather permitting, an XC flight followed by a debriefing on both days. Hopefully we can all learn something in the process. We plan to begin Saturday morning at 9 am.

Prerequisites:
Hang III rating or above (all pilots are welcome to attend the briefings) Good landing and approach skills Provide for ones own retrieval Ham radio preferred

This is not much lead time so the format may have to be modified depending on the number of participants. Anyone interested must reply by Monday, September 23 to both ricandkaren@compuserve.com and lhuffman@isrv.com

Please include your total hang gliding hours, total XC miles, and longest XC flight. Approximate time and miles will be fine. We will reply with additional details to anyone that is interested. Inquiries will not be handled through the server.

Also, the gang at Highland wants people to know that:

This is just a note to welcome anyone to Ric and Larry's XC Clinic at Highland Aerosports. As always, ampers are welcome on Saturday night. Bring along your favorite grillable. We'll provide the charcoal and grill. Also, bring along your favorite beverages, and favorite stories to swap around the campfire on Saturday night. We hope to see you out here.

The Tenth Annual McConnellsburg Hang Gliding Festival

The CHGPA and MHGA will be holding their annual Fly-In and Just-For-Fun XC Competition the first weekend of October. This year is a big one: 10 years for the Fly-In, and also the 20th anniversary of the club's purchase of The Pulpit launch site. So we plan to celebrate bigtime!

Details and the latest info can be found at the HGFest'2002 website

You'll save $20 if you register for HgFest'2002 in advance, plus you'll receive 10 tickets for the raffle. We're going to have a ton of great prizes, a cook-out and party on Saturday night, trophies and medals for the winners of the XC comp, and fireworks too! (drought permitting).

Our Festival benefits the Rescue Squad of McConnellsburg PA, so your participation will also help out a very worthy cause.

Reserve the first weekend of October for our Fly-In, we guarantee you'll have a great time if you do!

Party At The Tjaden's!

Paul and I are having a party on Friday, October 18th, around 7 PM, for all of our hang gliding and riding and neighborhood friends (it's the first weekend we don't have other plans, believe it or not). You are certainly welcome to camp or sleep upstairs where we have a couple of bedrooms and bathroom.

For our flying buddies, we live about an hour from Woodstock, so you could either fly and then come here on Friday or just take off for Woodstock Saturday morning (if the weather cooperates).

Anyhow, we'd love you all to come. Bring spouses or friends as you desire. I know we live a bit out of the way but if lots of you came it would be a really great time.

All you have to do is bring yourselves, but if you want to bring some beer or chips or something that's okay, too. Just come! I'll remind you all again about a week beforehand. Oh -- if you could please RSVP so we know how much booze to buy it would be helpful.

Directions to Tjaden Sport Horses (540-668-6439)

From The Beltway: Take 495 to 267, the toll road. Take the toll road west all the way to its end in Leesburg. There, stay in the left lane to merge onto Highway 7 west. Take 7 approximately 13 miles from Leesburg, to the Round Hill/Purcellville exit (do not take the previous exits that say "Purcellville" only). At the end of the exit ramp, turn right on Business 7. Go ½ mile into Round Hill. By the gas station (there's only one) turn right (or north) on 719 (which is also identified as "Main Street"). We are located 4 miles north of Round Hill, on 719, on the right hand side of the road. You'll know when you're getting close, because you'll see the board fence and run-in sheds. We've got a big sign made up to look like a stadium jump that says "Tjaden Sport Horses". Take the driveway all the way back through the trees to the barn.

From The Northeast: Take Highway 340 west almost into Harper's Ferry. At the traffic light after you cross the big bridge over the river (you'll know, trust me), turn left (or south) on Harper's Ferry Road. Take all the way to the stop sign at the "T" intersection. Turn left (or east) on Highway 9. After the fancy farm with the white fence, turn right on Cider Mill Road. The sign is small, so, keep your eyes open. (If you get to the little burg of Hillsboro, you've gone too far.) Take Cider Mill Road to a right on Woodgrove Road. We're a mile on the left. You'll know when you're getting close, because you'll see the board fence and run-in sheds. We've got a big sign made up to look like a stadium jump that says "Tjaden Sport Horses". Take the driveway all the way back through the trees to the barn.

From Warrenton: Take 17 north towards Marshall. However, when you come to I-66, don't get off on it (the way you would to stay on 17 North). Instead, continue straight on the road you're on, for the half mile or so into Marshall. At the stop sign in Marshall, continue straight. At that point the road name will change to Rectortown Road. Take Rectortown 6 miles (I'm guessing at ALL mileage from this direction, so don't take it as gospel) to a right on the Atoka Road. It will only go to the right. Follow the Atoka all the way to the stop sign. At the stop sign, turn right (Rectors Lane). Follow it a quarter mile to the next stop. There, turn right on Highway 50. Take 50 1/2 mile to a left on 611. Take 611 to the blinking light. Turn left on the Snickersville turnpike. In 4 miles, at the bottom of the hill in Airmont, by the little store, turn right, or North, on 719. Take all the way to the stop in Round Hill. In Round Hill turn right for half a second and then left again (the road doea a "dog leg") to stay on 719. We are 4 miles North of Round Hill on the right hand side of the road. You'll know when you're getting close, because you'll see the board fence and run-in sheds. We've got a big sign made up to look like a stadium jump that says "Tjaden Sport Horses". Take the driveway all the way back through the trees to the barn.

From Winchester: Go East on Highway 7 approx. 20 miles. Take the Round Hill/Purcellville exit on your right (there's a small exit on your left a mile or so before the one on your right -- don't take it). At the end of the exit ramp, turn left, or west, on Business 7. Take ½ mile into Round Hill.
