June Hangolaby Ellis KimAlright. This is my attempt at doing the hangola for this summer. Sheila is indisposed, so I'll try to take over for now. Hey, if anybody hasn't put in any CHGA time this year, such as site maintenance, serving on the board, organizing the Pulpit fly-in, contributing to the newsletter or serving on the board, you could volunteer to do the hangola. So, without further ado, here is the Hangola for June, July and August: Sat. 2 June Taylor Farm. Visibility was poor, but John had three students at Taylor Hill. Sunday 3 June Woodstock. Strong and crossing from the south. Nevertheless, a number of pilots decided to fly and were rewarded with decent flights despite some hairy launches: Steve Kinsley, Pete Schuman, Christy Huddle, Matthew Graham, Tom McGowan, Greg deWolf, Mike Chevalier, Terry Spence, Joe Schad, Brian Vant-Hull. A number of other pilots (some very experienced) decided not to fly given the ugly launch conditions. Matthew, Steve and Pete went to the reservoir, got about 1800 over. Pete was cold and landed at the North Point, Matthew and Steve fought their way almost all the way back to the Woodstock LZ. Looks like Pete took the day with 1800 over and 2 hours. Guys, you gotta report your flights, so we can determine who the airhog of the day was! Monday, 4 June High Rock. The retired airbum Steve Kinsley flew HR. (when will we get to fly there again?) Got to 3400 (not sure if MSL or AGL) after launching in a west cross. Found 600 up on average. Ridgely. Doug Rogers and Rich Green flew under 10% cumie skies. Winds, west, 13 to 18mph on the ground, but steady. Rich got 3800 over and 43 mins. Doug got a longer flight. Tuesday, 5 June High Rock. Marc Fink took his Targe out for a bank or two. Reported 1500 to 1800 over. Eddie Miller showed up later and had a nice evening flight. Saturday 9 June The short version: everybody flew and had great flights. Pulpit. Epic flights! Six pilots flew and all six of them went over the back and landed in the High Rock LZ!!! The six intrepid pilots were: Matthew Graham, Steve Kinsley, Kelvin Pierce, Dan Tomlinson and Dennis Sheely. This was also Dan Tomlinson's first over the back at the Pulpit EVER! Matthew reported boating around at 5k over most of the time climbing to 7500 AGL at one point. A personal best. High Rock. Bill Garrison, Karen Carra, Brian Hardwick, Rob Millman, Eddie Miller and Kurtis Kemerer all had nice soaring flights. Karen got to 900 over and 90 mins. Bill Garrison got 1:15. High Point. After a work party at High Point, Zirks and the Fairgrounds (Thanks you all!), Allen Sparks got an hour and 7200 MSL. Christy Huddle got to 9100 MSL, 2 hours and 18.5 miles, landed at PawPaw. Adam Arkins got 20 miles. JR had a great flight and landed in the LZ. Ridgely. 50% puffy cumies all around, Richard Hays got 4200 MSL and 30 mins. Joe Gregor got to 7800 and 54 miles!!! Landed in Berlin (Maryland not Germany). Judy McCarty got 4200 and 1:15. Fred Permenter got 60 miles and landed in Ocean City. Also going XC were: Ric Niehaus, Mike Chevalier, Dave Proctor, Tom McGowan and Steve Vogel. No clue how they did. Bummer. Also flews were: Geoff Mumford, Doug R. Scott, Aisha, Janet Gregor, Dave Green, Rich Green, John Muldoon and more. Steve Padgett took a tandem flight. Sunday, 10 June Pulpit. Launching into 15mph straight in gusts, Bacil Dickert went over the back, getting to Shady Grove for 18 miles. John Dullahan landed at the High Rock LZ, his first time making the crossing. Mark Cavanaugh landed near Upton for 10 miles. John Middleton and Brian Vant-Hull also went over the back. And Dan Tomlinson flew, too. Ridgely. Raean Permenter and Danny Brotto flew to Ocean City for 55 miles! Joe Gregor flew to Denton and back, got 2 hours. Mike Chevalier went north for 52 miles. And all that on a BLUE day! Judy McCarty got to 4300 for 1:10. Manquin. Greg de Wolf soared. So what else is new? High Point. Mark Gardner went 32 miles. Others who also flew, but left no info were: John McAllister, Adam Arkins and Marvin. Saturday and Sunday, 16 June Ridgely Fly-In. The Ridgely Fun Fly-In turned into the Ridgely Fun Boat-in. Kite surfing, windsurfing, canoeing, swimming and water volleyball were all to be enjoyed on the new lake which sprouted overnight after heavy downpour, giving whole new meaning of waterbed to some campers. Pilots got to demo Wills Wings and Aeros's new ships. Despite the limited flying everybody who showed up to support Highland Aerosports had a great time, great food and mint juleps and thinks everybody else missed out on a super weekend. Sunday, 17 June Woodstock. It was pretty strong, so Karen Carra, Gary Smith and Christy Huddle waited for the evening glass of and were rewarded with great flights. Christy was especially tickled, since it was her birthday. She got to 4k over. Mark Cavanaugh launched earlier before he had gotten rowdy. Matthew Graham launched after the worst was over and turned at the North Point and landed a little further south along with Mike Chevalier, Dan Tomlinson and Dave Proctor. They got about 3800 over and about 3 hours each. Karen made it alittle less South with an 1:10 flight. Greg deWolf got 4 hours flying upwind almost up to the next ridge. Terry Spencer and Gary Smith also had nice long flights. Pete Schuman with Terry Spencer got 3 hours and went to Short Mountain but didn't have enough for the New Market gap. Pulpit. Bob Gillessee flew and couldn't make it back to launch due to the north cross. Everybody packed up the gliders and bailed to High Rock. High Rock. Having bailed from the Pulpit, Judy McCarty and Bruce Engen each got about 2 hours. Bob Gillesse, Allen Sparks, Joe Brauch and Ed Reno got 2500 over. Kelvin Pierce flew his new Falcon until sunset. Monday, 18 June Ridgely. Haze dome, cumies. Danny Brotto had a helluva time demoing the Talon, getting Christy Huddle all impatient trying to demo it, too. Christy Huddle when getting her chance had the same trouble getting down. She reports it is easy to land, too. 4300 over. Tuesday, 19 June Redwing. Judy McCarty flew and got 30 mins. Saturday, 23 June High Rock. West 8-10, Allen Sparks test flew his glider for a couple of extendos. Sunday, 24 June High Rock. Mark Cavanaugh, Steve Krichten, Bruce Engen, Cragin Shelton, Dave Proctor, Steve Padgett, Adam Arkins, Doug Henderson, Skip Brown, Bob Gillessee all flew and had mostly extendos. Mark Cavanaugh and Skip Brown managed to eek out 30 mins each. Hallem. Christy Huddle and Judy McCarty joined the dark side by taking bagwing lessons with Bill Umstattd on the hill, joining Matthew Graham, Karen Carra and Ellis Kim. Ridgely. Ralph Sickinger did spot landings. Thursday, 28 June Ridgely. Rich Green played hookie and got rewarded with a 1:55 and 5067 feet! No fair. Friday, 29 June Ridgely. Light SW. Cragin Shelton worked on his aerotow rating. Saturday, 30 June Ridgely. Light day. Brian Vant Hull took his Eastern Shore summer camp kids for tandem rides at Ridgely. Strangely enough the kids were a little cautious, while the parents happily signed the waivers and forked ove the money. Hmmm... makes you wonder, eh? All the kids ended up enjoying though. Steve Kinsley flew 35 mins on a Target and later in the day got blown away with his windsurfer. Fred and Raean Permenter flew but didn't find any lift. Ric Niehaus flew and didn't go XC. John Muldoon, John Middleton, Bruce Satatis and Cragin Shelton all flew. Cragin Shelton earned his aertow rating. Congrats! Weekend, 30 June out west. Gary Smith, Bruce Engen and Allen Sparks drove out west to fly. They hit Hurricane, Utah and flew "Molly's Nipple" for an evening glass off. Then hit Vegas and flew "Jean". Sunday they flew "Jean" again. |
